THE SUSTAINABLE SILK BY ONGETTA

Ongetta, the European leader in the production of silk yarns and fabrics, has been for years a protagonist in the creation of increasingly sustainable products, recycling production waste in the various processes of the entire supply chain.

According to recent studies, the textile industry is second in the world in terms of environmental pollution. From the raw material to the finished product, there are many steps involved: all processes have a potentially significant environmental impact, both in terms of the large consumption of resources and the high quantity of pollutants. The entire textile industry therefore needs an effective overhaul in order to reduce this high impact and make the environment more sustainable. Every actor in the supply chain is called upon to review its own internal standards, through the achievement of important objectives set by the European Union, such as the development of new business models, the design of products aimed at recycling, and the orientation of consumers towards more sustainable options, also thanks to the introduction of the digital product passport. As Ongetta likes to emphasise, silk reeling has been a virtuous protagonist of recycling since ancient times, through the recovery in the spinning mill of the by-product called Kibiso, from which all discontinuous combed and re-combed silk products are born. Called “schappe silk”, the Ongetta company continues to promote them in the various textile applications by offering a punctual service for many qualities.
