Federal funding for made in the USA technical textiles

The amazing amount of USD 150 million (USD 75 million from federal source and 75 from private investors) has been allocated to research “revolutionary” textile fibres and materials: the funding allocated for the new Institute for Manufacturing Innovation for textile was announced by the US President Barack Obama himself.

The primary task of the Revolutionary Fibers and Textiles Institute for Manufacturing Innovation will be the creation of a hub to bring together manufacturing companies, universities and non-profit organizations with the aim of supporting research, development and marketing of highly innovative textiles with exceptional performances.

The medium term target of this investment is to lay the foundations for an American leadership in technical textile, while in the short term it aims at consolidating a re-birth of the US textile supply chain. Indeed, the American textile industry is showing an upturn: after two decades, the employment in the sector is growing again, and exports have marked a great step forward (+ 45% since 2009).
